SEE vs NEB Grading System: What's the Real Difference?
As students move from SEE (Class 10) to NEB Class 11–12, the grading system may look similar (4.0 GPA scale), but the calculation method, subject structure, and evaluation system change significantly.
This guide explains the real, accurate differences based on the NEB grading system.
1. GPA Calculation Method
SEE (Class 10)
- Uses a simple average system
- GPA = average of all subject grade points
- No official credit-hour weighting system
Example: If you get grades A, B+, A+, B → GPA is just the average
NEB (Class 11–12)
- Uses a weighted credit-hour system
- GPA formula:
GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hour) ÷ Total Credit Hours
- Subjects have different weights based on theory and practical
This makes NEB GPA calculation more complex and precise
2. Theory vs Practical System
SEE
- Mostly: 75 (theory) + 25 (internal/practical)
- Some subjects may be fully theory-based
- Final grade is combined
NEB
- Every subject has its own structure:
- Common: 75 theory + 25 practical
- Some: 50 theory + 50 practical (e.g. Computer)
- Important:
- Final grade = combined result
- But you must meet minimum requirement in components
3. Credit Hour Difference (CRITICAL)
SEE
- No formal credit-hour system
- All subjects contribute equally to GPA
NEB
- Each subject has separate credit hours
- Theory and practical are counted differently
Example:
- Nepali:
- Theory = 2.25
- Practical = 0.75
This means: Some subjects affect GPA more than others
4. NG (Not Graded) Rule
Both SEE & NEB
- If marks < 35% → NG (Not Graded)
Key Difference
SEE:
- Can appear in supplementary exam easily
NEB:
- More serious impact:
- Must clear subject for further study
- Required for university eligibility
5. Subject Structure
SEE
- Same subjects for all students
- General education system
NEB
- Students choose streams:
- Science
- Management
- Humanities
- Education
Subjects differ completely by stream
GPA comparison across streams is not always equal
🔍 Summary
- SEE = simple GPA (average-based)
- NEB = weighted GPA (credit-based)
- NEB has:
- More complex calculation
- Theory + practical requirements
- Subject specialization
Understanding this early helps you focus on subjects that impact your GPA the most
